We walked to St Peter’s Basilica. Although we started off after a good breakfast, crabbiness was setting in by the time we made it over near the basilica so we stopped and ate a greatly overpriced, mediocre lunch. Food and cold drinks revived spirits a bit so we continued on to see the heart of Catholism. We have a ebook called “Mission Rome” which is a kind of scavenger hunt for kids of interesting things in Rome. Luckily Enmgamer read through the St Peter’s Basillica section (plus I had the book on my ipad) so we were able to find several items in our quest and pick up a bit of knowledge too.
Michelangelo’s La Pieta is behind glass now (it wasn’t when Paul and I were there 20 years ago). 14 years ago a deranged man attacked the statue with a hammer, breaking Mary’s nose and hand. La Pieta is the only piece of work Michelangelo ever signed.
The original plan was to go to the Sistine chapel afterward but everyone was tired so we left that for Saturday. Later I had a rather pricy piece of cake at a restaurant below our apartment so I could use their internet to send email.
